5 Ways To Show Yourself Some Love
Friend, I know you. You have so many responsibilities, a to-do list that’s a mile long, and not enough hours in the day to get any of it done. And when you do have a spare moment in your schedule, you find yourself scrolling aimlessly on IG.
See, I told you I know you… Because I’m the same way! But the truth is, there will always be another thing to do. If you put yourself at the top of your to-do list, you will notice that you will be more productive, alert, and focused to tackle the rest of it! So friend, today I’m giving you 5 ways to show yourself some love.
Now before you scroll away, I’m not saying you have to do a P90x workout or join a CrossFit gym. For me, exercise looks like doing a few sun salutations in the morning or taking a walk around the block after lunch. The reason that exercise is an amazing form of self care is because your body is meant to MOVE. Working out actually releases seratonin and endorphines that naturally relieve stress!
So the next time you opt to work an extra an hour instead of hitting the gym, think about the lasting effects that stress will have on your body. The to-do list will still be there later.
2. Seek community.
When was the last time you sought out true community? I don’t just mean commenting on your girlfriend’s photo, “gorgeous!” No, that’s not true community. Now, I understand if you’re not an extrovert--I can be a true homebody--but as humans we long for true community and genuine connection. If nothing else, it’s something to distract us from our phones and our work!
Go out with your girlfriends this weekend, put your phone away to be present in the moment, and you will notice a complete shift in your mindset, priorities, and the way you feel.
3. Find a hobby.
Do something for yourself, girl! I actually love the fact that I’m not in school for music now because when I play violin, I do it because I WANT to. If music isn’t your thing, find what makes you happy and make TIME to do it. Don’t just do your hobby when you have nothing else to do! One of the best forms of self care is simply prioritizing something you enjoy every single week or day.
4. Get enough sleep.
The average person needs a minimum of 7 hours of sleep per night. In a recent study, a group of participants had their reaction time tested after 5 days of getting 7 hours of sleep, and then had it tested again after 5 nights of just 5 hours of sleep. In 100% of the participants, after 5 days of having just 5 hours of sleep per night, their reaction time was the exact same as someone who is DRUNK.
I’m sure you guys know about the benefits of sleep and don't need a lecture, so I’m just here to remind you to love yourself and make it a priority.
5. Take your makeup off before bed.
This is such a simple thing we can ALL do. I know a lot of you are rolling your eyes right now, but hear me out! If you take the time to take your makeup off and wash your face before bed, it’s the best thing you can do for your skin. Makeup clogs your pores and those oils and dirt will cause breakouts. And everyone knows that pimples don’t really do much for your confidence, right? Take the 5 minutes tonight and you’ll thank yourself tomorrow.
The last thing I want to leave you with is: you cannot tackle your to-do list or be the best girlfriend, sister, coworker, or friend before you’ve taken care of yourself. Put your own oxygen mask on first by making yourself a priority before you try to put on someone’s else. The to-do list can wait, girlfrand… Your health cannot!
