Guest Expert Meagan Wright Hernandez: "How to Build Your Business on Solid Legal & Financial Ground"
Accounting is definitely NOT one of my strong points. When I initially began my VA for a day business, I knew that I’d need some assistance in this daunting area. That’s when I crossed paths with Meagan Wright Hernandez.
Meagan is a professional Tax & Financial Accountant and Financial Educator. After receiving her Accounting degree and working 10 years in the industry, Meagan decided to start her own business.
She now works with Online Entrepreneurs and Freelancers throughout the US. Her firm handles Small Business Owners' Accounting, Bookkeeping, Tax, Budgeting & Consulting needs. The other half of her business model is geared toward training those that want to learn how to best handle their own Business Finances and aspiring Bookkeepers & Financial Professionals. *Thank God Meagan exists, am I right????*
When Meagan isn't working on growing her business and serving her clients, she enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 year old son. Together as a family, they enjoy living near the beach in South Carolina, playing outside with their 2 fur babies and preparing for the arrival of baby #2!
After connecting with Meagan about a year ago, I KNEW that my Booked Out VA group needed to hear her accounting wisdom. Thankfully, she agreed to speak as our third guest expert, following Danielle Cevallos & Alexis Fortier.
Meagan talked to us about how to build our business on solid legal and financial ground. Seriously, this girl knows her stuff. She was able to answer all of our questions seamlessly afterward in a live Q+A, even though the world of accounting can be so complicated!
Meagan covered so many points regarding legalities and finances, including her advice on:
>> Choosing a business entity catered to your situation. There are lots of options out there, but it’s important to take the time and research what’s best for YOU.
>> Utilizing an accounting program (QuickBooks, Wave, FreshBooks) to serve as a tracking system. This method will be much more efficient in tracking the ins and outs of our businesses rather than simply using Excel or Google Sheets.
>> Recording tax deductible expenses. Meagan provided a list of the top ten tax deductible expenses for online entrepreneurs, which is SO helpful since it’s specifically catered to the industry we’re in.
Dare I say it…Meagan managed to make the topic of accounting seem much less scary by the end of the training! (However, Imma be hitting her up come tax time, because I just gotta take advantage of her expertise!)
