My Top Tips For Working With your SO

At the end of October, Addison and I embarked on a business venture, A&K Podcast Services. Plus, we created our first course, How To Launch A Podcast In 30 Days together, and managed to not kill one another! ;)

But seriously, over the past almost 2 months, we have had our ups and downs, but so far our business is thriving and so is our relationship. In this episode, I walk you through what it's really like working with your SO from home... and a few tips if you're thinking about going into business with your partner too.

Know Your Roles

My first tip for you if you’re thinking of going into business with your boyfriend is to know your roles. Addison and I knew going into our venture what are strengths and weaknesses are and we delegated tasks accordingly. Of course, I took more of the organizing and communication roles, and he was in charge of the behind the scenes technical stuff. It worked perfectly… So be sure to have this conversation too!

Set Boundaries

Next, be sure to set boundaries in your work because you never truly leave work if you live with your colleague! Have separate work spaces… just because we work together doesn’t mean we share a desk or something! Another example of a boundary you can set if you live and work together is to not talk about work after a certain hour, on the weekends, etc. This just makes sure that you are separating your relationship from your work because otherwise aren’t you just colleagues?

Talk About “What If…”

Of course, working with your partner leads to the ever-common question: What would happen if we broke up? Now that is obviously something I haven’t personally experienced, but I can tell you that the two of you need to have a mature conversation about this before starting your business. I know that if Addison and i were ending our relationship, we would be really careful about making decisions for the business, mostly because we are both very logical and level-headed people. If you aren’t sure you could handle that, it’s okay! But maybe you should rethink your decision. Jussayin’!

Put Your Relationship First

Moral of the story is if you work with your partner, you should make sure that your relationship always comes first. It can get easy, especially for high performers, to focus on the work at hand and forget about the relationship. That is why it is so important set boundaries, talk about EVERYthing, and have loads of respect for each other. Don’t be afraid to put an end to the business if it hurts your relationship… that’s the most important thing you have and if there is something threatening it, don’t let that get in the way.
